EVE Online is a massively multiplayer online space sim created by Icelandic developers CCP. Set in the New Eden star cluster, where Earth is little more than a myth, five empires of humanity seek to forge their destiny. Unique among most MMOs is the largely removed skill grind, allowing for advancement even for those who can barely play one hour a day; an amazingly detailed economic system; and a PVP environment that has been compared to Ultima Online at its prime.

Game Information

Empires

Players can choose to have their characters hail from one of four empires, each of which contains three bloodlines. These choices are largely cosmetic, as with sufficent training any character can fly any race's ships:

A fifth empire, the Jove Empire, is not currently playable.

Attributes

From the official site:

  • Intelligence

Intelligence is the primary attribute for: Electronics, Engineering, Mechanic, Navigation, Science skills. It is an absolute must for those who want to squeeze the best performance from their ships and equipment, as well as those who wish to pursue a research career path.

  • Charisma

Charisma is the primary attribute for Social skills and most Trade skills. Social skills are vital to dedicated agent mission runners, and to improve standings for such things as refine percentages. Trade skills are more important to those who play on the market as anything more than a casual purchaser/seller. It is of limited use to combat or production-oriented characters, and may be a good choice to leave at its original level unless you are a trader or mission-runner. Social, Connections, Negotiations, and Fast Talk are all important to dedicated agent runners.

  • Perception

Perception is the primary attribute for most Spaceship Command skills as well as all Missile and Gunnery skills, and is secondary for Drone and Navigation skills, Missiles, some important Gunnery skills Perception is therefore the most important attribute for combat-oriented characters. However, other character types should also consider perception important. Spaceship Command skills tend to be high rank (taking longer to learn) and are also must-have skills for pretty much all types of characters (especially if you want the option to fly many different classes of ship). Perception is also the secondary skill for Drones, Gunnery, and Navigation so it is well worth spending time training 'spatial awareness'.

  • Willpower

Willpower is the primary attribute for Leadership skills and elite Spaceship Command skills, as well as some Trade skills. It also is secondary to most combat skills (Gunnery and Missile skills). Therefore, it's a very important skill for commanders and 'hard-core' combat careers.

  • Memory

Memory is the primary attribute for Drone skills, as well as Industry, Corporate Management and Learning skills, so they are very important. They are an absolute must for miner, production, and scientific career paths. Given its impact on Corporation Management skills, it is also important for characters involved in the management of player corporations.

Backstory

From the official site:

EVE takes place in a cluster of stars far from mankind’s original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and whether or not that cradle of civilization still exists, is a mystery. Humans arrived through a natural wormhole and, gazing up upon an alien sky they had never seen, were completely unable to determine where this new world was located. From the New Eden solar system, where the gate of EVE once led to the old world, humans expanded in all directions at a furious pace, exploring and colonizing rapidly.

Then, unexpectedly and seemingly unprovoked, the EVE gate collapsed in an apocalyptic catastrophe of a scale never before witnessed by the human race, ruining the New Eden system in the process. Thousands of small colonies were left in complete isolation to fend for themselves, cut off from the old world. For millennia they endured, clinging to the brink of extinction, and only a handful managed to survive.

Of those that lasted, five were to rise up and become the major empires that, between them, hold the balance of power in the world of EVE. Today, they are known as the Amarr Empire, the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State, the Minmatar Republic, and the Jovian Empire. Additionally, the world is full of several small, independent factions and states.

For more than a century, the five empires have lived together in relative peace. They’ve continually strived to maintain this peace, as each faction realizes only too well the grave consequences of a massive inter-stellar war. Recent technological breakthroughs in FTL travel, and the ensuing increase in space travelers, have shaken, but not broken, the fragile peace... at least not yet.

New Eden

Though New Eden is properly known only as the star system which the EVE gate opened into, it has become a name for the star cluster as a whole. New Eden is comprised of many regions, most of which can be classfieid as either Empire space or 0.0 space.

EVE Gate

The EVE gate, located in the New Edem system itself, was the stargate that connected the now-lost world of Earth to the New Eden cluster. With the gate rendered nonfunctional, Earth has become little more than a myth to the people of New Eden.
